Wedding Series: The White Dress

Before getting engaged, I hadn't thought much about what kind of dress I wanted to wear. I guess I was unsure of which dress style would best suit my petite frame.  I started flipping through bridal magazines to get an idea of what I liked, but the only thing I knew for sure was that I didn't want to wear a strapless dress.  I definitely wasn't the go-to-as-many-stores-as-possible kind of bride.  I figured I shouldn't confuse myself with too many options. As soon as I found a dress that I liked, I was quick to purchase it.  My dress was from David's Bridal. It was a strapless trumpet style lace dress with a beaded belt. The associate showed me the matching lace straps for the dress and I was sold.

At my first alterations appointment, after they pinned up my dress for hemming I told the seamstress that I had tried on the matching straps for the dress. She brought out a new set of straps, placed them on my shoulders and started pinning them to my dress. Something wasn't right. I told them that I wanted them sewn on as straps but the seamstress insisted they were not straps but actually cap sleeves. Since the dress had a corset back, she said they would not be able to sew them on as straps. I was frustrated and in a bit of a panic. I quickly made a trip over to Fabricland and searched through their entire section of lace.  No dice.  They were either too wide, too flashy or the lace just wouldn't match.

My last resort was Etsy.  Now, I've had my fair share of experiences ordering items from Etsy.  Some pieces are carefully packaged and beautifully handmade whereas others were nothing short of disappointment.  I knew I would be taking a real chance but I had few options left.  I scrolled through pages and pages of "removable lace straps" until I came across a seller from Turkey.  The measurements seemed right and the colour looked like a match so I held my breath and put in my order hoping for the best.  Well, the straps arrived from Turkey in just one week and I nervously cut open the packaging and peered into the bag.  They looked... great!!  The colour was perfect, the quality was excellent and the length was just right.  What a relief!

Thanks for reading!  Lots more wedding related posts to come.

Until next time,

  1. :D!!! I didn't realize you could get straps and sew it on...that definitely adds more options to a wedding dress! And I personally loved it the straps, it was a beautiful touch personalized to a beautiful bride!
