ERINKIRSTEN Travels: Oahu, Hawaii (Accomodations & Our First Airbnb Experience)

This post is long overdue.  I have been meaning to blog about this trip for months, but the procrastinator in me has been putting it off until now.  As I (finally) begin typing away, I realize this will probably be a long, long post (I just have too many good memories to recount!).  As such, I've decided to document our trip in three separate posts

We traveled to Oahu, Hawaii for our honeymoon back in July 2016.
We were only there for a total of six days (which we were seriously regretful about the second we arrived on the island).  I mean, my husband loved it so much that he was overjoyed it was thunderstorming the night before we left.  He was hoping our flight would be delayed so we could stay for a few extra days. (To his dismay, our flight was not delayed and we returned home as scheduled).  We didn't have enough time to explore the whole island, but we tried to make the most of it while we were there.

Prior to leaving
we spent some time researching about the things that we wanted to see and do (and eat!)We didn't start planning until about a week before the wedding (another big mistake) when we were both mentally and physically exhausted. Albeit, we did come up with a long list of "must tries" and were given some good recommendations from friends who had previously visited Oahu.

I will be sharing about our first Airbnb experience and accommodations, food, hiking and other activities.

Going to Hawaii, we knew that we needed to rent a car in order to travel to all the destinations we had in mind.  As you're probably aware, hotels in Hawaii can be rather pricey.  Most hotels charge $50USD+ just for daily parking, so after weighing the pros and cons we decided to book an Airbnb instead.

Prior to booking our trip to Hawaii, I had little experience with Airbnb.  To my surprise (and relief), the sign up process was easy and communicating with our host was a breeze.  We picked the days we wanted to book and the reservation was sent to our host for approval.  Our experience was hassle free and I would consider booking accommodations through Airbnb for many of our trips in the future.

Our Airbnb was located in East Oahu, Kaimuki, Honolulu in a quiet residential neighbourhood up on a hill.  We enjoyed being away from the hustle and bustle of the islandI still remember our scenic drives up and down the hill each day with Diamond Head and the ocean out in the distance - it was breathtakingA couple times we would marvel at the view and stop at the side of the road to take pictures.  Although the place we were staying at was located up on a hill, we were only a quick 5-10 minute drive away from Diamond Head and the Waikiki Strip.

The owner called the place their "studio cottage" (Canadians may call them coach houses).  The unit was completely separate from the owner's home, but located above their covered parking area.  The view from the balcony was refreshing and we could even reach out of our window for bananas!

The place had everything we needed for our stay.  We didn't have a kitchen, but there was a small toaster oven and bar fridge for our drinks and late nights snacks.  The closet was well stocked with bath and beach towels for our use.  There was even a washer and dryer which was great for our beach days (and the day we got stuck in a rainstorm, but I'll save that story for another time).

Overall, we had a great experience booking and staying at our Airbnb.  We are so glad we chose a quiet neighbourhood and we truly miss the views from where we stayedMore to come in my next Hawaii post!  Thanks for reading.

Until next time,

E.
